Hola, soy una mujer mexicana del vibrante corazón de la Ciudad de México, una viajera que ha
pasado 25 años en la belleza perdurable de Roma y 7 años bajo el cálido sol de Los Ángeles.
Pero en enero de 2022, mientras aún estaba en California, sentí un llamado a regresar a México. Después
de pasar las fiestas en Progreso, me encontré nuevamente en Mérida. No era mi primera visita,
pero esta vez, no pude evitar enamorarme de la ciudad.
Mérida había cambiado, revelando un encanto que era tanto familiar como refrescantemente nuevo.
Las casas históricas en el Centro estaban siendo cuidadosamente restauradas, cada una contando
historias del pasado mientras miraban hacia el futuro. Había un sentido de renovación en cada
esquina, una energía vibrante que era difícil de ignorar.
Los sabores de la región, tan familiares desde las cocinas de mis abuelas—una yucateca, la otra de Campeche—eran tan deliciosos como siempre. Pero ahora, estaban complementados por una variedad de cocinas internacionales, una diversidad culinaria que era tanto sorprendente como deliciosa. Mérida, con sus modernos centros comerciales, cines y un rico calendario cultural, ofrecía mucho más de lo que había imaginado.
Sin embargo, lo que realmente me conquistó fue la calidez de los yucatecos y la seguridad que
sentí en esta ciudad.
Mientras recorría las calles de esta cautivadora ciudad, pensé para mí misma: Aquí es donde quiero invertir.
Así que comencé la búsqueda de la propiedad perfecta, un lugar donde mis aspiraciones pudieran echar raíces. Exploré de todo: desde modernos apartamentos con todas las comodidades hasta casas recién construidas en la zona norte de la ciudad.
Pero sabía lo que quería: el Centro Histórico, particularmente el barrio de Santiago. Algunas personas cuestionaron mi elección, señalando que era caro y que era preferido mayormente por extranjeros. Pero mi decisión fue firme: quería autenticidad.
Soy una mujer de «barrio», atraída por el carácter de una casa antigua con sus gruesos muros de mampostería, el mercado vibrante con productos frescos y los sonidos de los vendedores ambulantes que pasan. Para mí, vivir en los suburbios sería como vivir en cualquier otro lugar, pero el Centro… el Centro es únicamente Mérida.
Aunque mi intención original era invertir, la vida a menudo nos lleva en direcciones inesperadas.
A finales de 2022, cuando mis hijas emprendieron sus propios caminos, sentí un creciente deseo
de mudarme a Mérida. ¿Por qué no ahora?, pensé. Era hora de regresar a mi amado México, a la
tierra donde nació mi abuela Matilde, y de abrazar un nuevo capítulo. Así que en enero de 2023,
hice la mudanza—esta vez, para quedarme.
Quizás fue porque llegué sola, lista para un nuevo comienzo, o tal vez fue mi experiencia de adaptarme a diferentes culturas, pero regresar a México se sintió tanto natural como emocionante. Mi viaje había cerrado el círculo.
A mis veintitantos años, estudié arquitectura en México antes de mudarme a Italia para profundizar en el diseño de moda.
Viví en Florencia y Milán, y al regresar a México, trabajé como diseñadora de vestuario en Televisa, donde conocí a mi futuro esposo, quien tenía raíces italianas. Hicimos nuestro hogar en Roma, donde equilibré mi amor por el diseño de vestuario con mi pasión por la arquitectura y el diseño de interiores.
La creatividad siempre ha sido el núcleo de quien soy. Mi llegada a Mérida me llevó a conocer a una persona talentosa que se convertiría en mi socio, alguien que comparte mi pasión por el diseño y una genuina apreciación por esta ciudad. Juntos, hemos asumido el desafío de revitalizar propiedades históricas.
En solo 18 meses, hemos restaurado una casa en el centro, y otras tres están actualmente en proceso de transformación.
Acabo de vender la primera casa que compré en Mérida, confirmando que esta ciudad, con su
encanto perdurable, fue de hecho el lugar correcto para invertir tanto mi dinero como mi corazón.
Ahora, me encuentro al comienzo de una nueva fase en mi vida, buscando la casa perfecta que se
convierta en mi hogar definitivo—un lugar donde pueda continuar diseñando espacios hermosos
y disfrutar de la vibrante vida que Mérida ofrece.
En esta ciudad, donde la historia se encuentra con la modernidad, he encontrado no solo un lugar para vivir, sino un lugar para crecer, crear y prosperar. Porque nunca es demasiado tarde para perseguir tus pasiones y comenzar de nuevo.
From the Heart of Mexico to the Eternal City, the City of Angels, and Finally, the White City of Mérida
Hola, I am a Mexican woman from the lively heart of Mexico City, a traveler who has spent 25 years in the enduring beauty of Rome and 7 years under the warm sun of Los Angeles. But in January 2022, while still in California, I felt a pull to return to Mexico.
After spending the holidays in Progreso, I found myself in Mérida once again. It wasn’t my first visit, but this time, I couldn’t help but fall in love with the city. Mérida had transformed, revealing a charm that was both familiar and refreshingly new.
The historic houses in the Center were being carefully restored, each one telling stories of the past while looking toward the future. There was a sense of renewal in every corner, a vibrant energy that was hard to miss. The flavors of the region, so familiar from my grandmothers’ kitchens—one Yucatecan, the other from Campeche—were as delicious as ever.
But now, they were complemented by a variety of international cuisines, a culinary diversity that was both
surprising and delightful. Mérida, with its modern shopping malls, cinemas, and a rich cultural calendar, offered so much more than I had imagined.
Yet, what truly won me over was the warmth of the Yucatecans and the safety I felt in this city.
As I wandered through the streets of this captivating city, I thought to myself: This is where I
want to invest. So, I began the search for the perfect property, a place where my aspirations could
take root. I explored everything—from sleek, modern apartments with all the amenities to newly
built houses in the northern part of the city.
But I knew what I wanted: the Historic Center, particularly the Santiago neighborhood. Some people questioned my choice, noting that it was expensive and mostly favored by foreigners.
But my decision was firm: I wanted authenticity. I am a woman of the “barrio,” drawn to the character of an old house with its thick masonry walls, the lively market with fresh produce, and the sounds of street vendors passing by.
For me, living in the suburbs would be like living anywhere else, but the Center… the Center is uniquely Mérida.
Though my original intention was to invest, life often takes us in unexpected directions. By the
end of 2022, as my daughters embarked on their own paths, I felt a growing desire to move to
Mérida.
Why not now? I thought. It was time to return to my beloved Mexico, to the land where
my grandmother Matilde was born, and to embrace a new chapter.
So, in January 2023, I made the move—this time, for good. Perhaps it was because I arrived alone, ready for a fresh start, or maybe it was my experience of adapting to different cultures, but returning to Mexico felt both natural and exciting.
My journey had come full circle. In my early twenties, I studied architecture in Mexico before moving to
Italy to delve into fashion design.
I lived in Florence and Milan, and upon returning to Mexico, I worked as a costume designer at Televisa, where I met my future husband, who had Italian roots.
We made our home in Rome, where I balanced my love for costume design with my passion for
architecture and interior design.
Creativity has always been at the core of who I am. My arrival in Mérida led me to a talented individual who would become my business partner, someone who shares my passion for design and a genuine appreciation for this city.
Together, we have taken on the challenge of revitalizing historic properties. In just 18 months, we have
restored one house in the center, and three more are currently being transformed. I’ve just sold the first house I bought in Mérida, confirming that this city, with its enduring charm, was indeed the right place to invest both my money and my heart.
Now, I find myself at the beginning of a new phase in my life, searching for the perfect house to become my forever home—a place where I can continue to design beautiful spaces and enjoy the vibrant life that Mérida offers. In this city, where history meets modernity, I have found not just a place to live, but a place to grow, to create, and to thrive. Because it’s never too late to pursue your passions and start anew.
